About the Author

Anne-Marie Yerks is an author, instructor, fine artist, and designer who specializes in graphics and interface design with Macromedia software. She has taught HTML and Web design at George Mason University and George Washington University. Currently, she develops Web sites and kiosks for the University of Michigan. She has contributed articles to numerous publications about the Web, and has co-authored two books about the Internet. She is in the process of developing a series of Web animations that will go online in late 2001.

John Pickett is a 20-year-old student with plans on majoring in Computer Science at the University of Utah. He is also co-owner of a small Web firm, Blurred Vision Studios L.L.C. (http://www.bvstudios.com), located in Salt Lake City, Utah. He has been using HTML since he was 15 years old, while only expanding his view to business site creation in the past two years. John began using Dreamweaver during version 2.

Blaine Tait is an instructor at Durham College in Ontario, Canada, teaching a variety of Web-based courses such as HTML, JavaScript, Flash Web Animation, Interface Design for the Web, and of course, Dreamweaver. Blaine also operates his Web design and multimedia company, Omnidirectional Studios, just outside of Toronto. They offer computer-based solutions for business, including print and Web design, and rich media creation (Shockwave and Flash animation, 3D content and animation, digital audio, and e-commerce setup and implementation).

Blaine uses Macromedia Dreamweaver in his day-to-day work with Omni. He also uses a host of other Macromedia software in combination with Dreamweaver, such as Flash, Fireworks, and Freehand, as an end-to-end Web-content creation and maintenance system.

Matthew David has been working with multimedia and Web Technologies for over 6 years. He has contributed to books, such as the Dreamweaver Bible, Flash 5 Magic, and Flash: Visual Insight, and he regularly contributes to Element K Journals' Multimedia Development and Design magazine. He has written over a dozen online courses and is the lead instructor for Allen Interactions. In addition to writing, Matthew is an Intranet consultant.

Laura Gutman has worked as a graphic designer for 13 years and a multimedia developer for 10 years. Before that, she was a violinist, technical writer, law student, and professional academic. She earned her Ph.D. in English from the University of St. Andrews (Scotland). Currently, Laura lives with her dog, parakeets, and hundreds of computer toys in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She keeps busy doing freelance development, design and consulting work on multimedia, and Web projects. She also teaches a range of courses in Web design, multimedia design, and programming at the University of New Mexico and at Caliente Media Center (New Mexico's only authorized Macromedia training facility). Reader review(s):

Answers any DW question, June 9, 2001
Inside Dreamweaver 4 AUTHOR: Anne-Marie Yerks and John Pickett PUBLISHER: New Riders REVIEWED BY: Barbara Rhoades

BOOK REVIEW: With over 700 pages of information, Inside Dreamweaver 4 begins with Contents at a Glance page. The Table of Contents has 12 pages and the index includes 27 pages. A reader should be able to locate any item they would want to know about in Dreamweaver with such detail help sections.

The 24 chapters include such information as how to customize DW, HTML, Linking, Navigation, working with images, tables and frames, layers, organization, CSS, templates, libraries, JavaScript and advanced uses of DW. In the chapters, you can find highlighted boxes with tips and notes. After each chapter, you will find a summary of what the chapter contained. All graphic illustrations are in black and white.

This book will walk you through the Dreamweaver program. Whether you want to brush up a technique or learn the program, this is the detailed book to do it with.

Third One's a Charm, June 14, 2001
This was the third book about Dreamweaver book I've attempted to adopt as the proverbial reference guide. The other two were a bit interesting but lacked in many areas. This one's it though. I recommend this book for the Dreamweaver proficient as well as the beginner. It will be hard for any other book to beat the clarity of the layout, the timeliness of the illustrations, and the logical steps of how the learning progresses. Much, much better than the Dummies and Bible series.

well well, i'm impressed again as usual with new riders, February 24, 2002
this is a great intermediate-advanced level book(which means you should begin your DW/web design studies elsewhere(DW Virtual Classroom HIGHLY recommended). Don't try to study too much at once, you'll actually slow yourself down. Start from the bottom.
One thing at a time.

ok, the fact of the matter is there are tons of books that try to instruct on usage of Dreamweaver... and yes, most of them cover DW respective to its experience level(i.e.: beginner, intermediate...), BUT keep in mind that it's not whether it covers the material or not, it's how the material is presented.

Many books have random comments and are not organized. The result? Unnecessary slow learning, repetition of reading, and confusion. I can say this b/c I've read many web design relevant books. And as for INSIDE DREAMWEAVER 4, it's none of the above; it's close to perfect, pleasure to read, and by far better than Dreamweaver 4 BIBLE(the bible doesn't even come close to touching the calibre of this book). I won't go any further criticizing, but do see for yourself by comparing both of these books. Inside Dreamweaver 4 is just simply the smarter tutorial reference.

I'm a very demanding critic(see my other reviews and see for yourself), yet I gave this book 5 stars. It's really that good.
Once you find yourself midway on the DW ladder, go thru this book, you won't regret it.

A great Guide to a Great Application, June 27, 2001
This is a wonderful Dreamweaver Resource that offers an easy path to harnessing the world's most powerful visual web authoring tool. The book adeptly bridges the gap between the more simplistic Dummies, Quick Start and H.O.T. guides and the all-inclusive Bible series. Kudos to the authors for their concise explanations. This is a keeper.

Dreamweaver Magic, October 20, 2001
I have only read through the first 5 chapters and what can I say. I have read a few Dreamweaver books and none of them compares to this one. Inside Dreamweaver 4 covers every aspect of the program and more. The book is easy to read and to understand. The tutorials are great and easy to follow. If you only purchase one Dreamweaver book, get this one.

Without doubt the best Dreamweaver book on the Market, May 31, 2001
There are lots of Dreamweaver books on the market, but without doubt this is the best one. Not only do you find out how to work with Dreamweaver, but you find out all the hidden secrets and techniques you really need to get the job done.

It just a bad book!, November 26, 2001
First i bougth this book because i found a good rating at this site!!. I dont know why these people put that raiting, i think they work Anne and John or what.

The book it is hard to read, and boring. I has lot of text, lots lots lots of text in a boring fashion. The cd is not a big help and the exersises are no well constructed. My advide do not buy this book it much better lyndas books "Dreamveaver 4 Hot hands on trainig" they did an exellent job. You read that book and you feel like someoen its with you teaching, and the cd has cool videos that seems that a person is talking to you and teach you what or not to do! I really recomend that book for beginners to intermidiate.

Inside is a good for people that like to read dictionaries or encilopeidis the Hot it for people that like to be teached with a person, in this case the book and the cd is a virtual teacher. Now im in the chaper 11 of inside im boring, I prefer hot because the videos and easy to read. I hope you find this a good review, if you want to buy do it, but first go to a libray a take both book and see the diffences.

Fantastic resource!, May 25, 2001
This is a great book if you want to learn about Macromedia Dreamweaver 4, the authors did an excellant job explaining the new features of version 4 and is a great reference and tutorial for web designers. Ann-Marie Yerks is a professional well versed in Macromedia products. I highly recommend this book.

Robert Ferrara ...

Great Dreamweaver Reference, March 23, 2002
I was looking for a book that I could just pick up and find answers to my problems as I went along, and this book delivered. Although this book could very well be read cover to cover (as it is very informative and educational,) I appreciated that each chapter also can be read individually. So I could read only the sections I was interested in and get on to my work. The book is well organized and has clear explainations. It also does not overload you with a lot of useless excersises. Highly recommend!

Very Helpful, August 26, 2001
Like many of the other reviews, I also found this book quite helpful. It's very detailed and also gives you a lot of the why something is done, not just the how. I also found the Fireworks section to be much more complete and thorough than most combination books. This is a huge book packed with tons of valuable information to help you get up to speed quickly with dreamweaver. I've gotten rusty and this guide answered my questions quickly. I was able to use it as a reference book by looking in the index to locate exactly what areas I needed help on.
