Editorial description(s):

Amazon.com
Lee Anne Phillips proves that you don't have to be a programmer or even technically minded to put together an interesting and professional-looking Web site. All you need is a little taste, some common sense, and a bit of guidance. This book takes users by the hand--even those who haven't purchased their first computer yet.

Her first chapter is elementary, covering everything from selecting a computer to choosing an Internet service provider. Next, she launches into how to create your first Web page, using simple but realistic examples to turn seemingly daunting code into a simple set of instructions for building a basic and attractive Web site. Phillips demystifies the process, showing how to use the simple text editors that come with each computer.

Gradually Phillips moves into more advanced topics, such as images and multimedia, how to control the presentation, how to add interactivity, and more. She summarizes key points and additional tips in quick side notes on the borders of each page.

Using HTML 4 is not an exhaustive exploration of HTML 4, but it highlights the most important and useful features for newbies who want to build a Web site for family, hobbies, or small business. --Elizabeth Lewis

Reader review(s):

This book should be required text for all future HTML'ers, August 31, 1999
I bought this book before I had a computer in my home. However, by the time I had finished the second chapter, I was already composing web pages in my head. Lee Anne does an excellent job of introducing the ins and outs of correct HTML coding. Not only does she bring you up to par with todays coding standards but, she uses keen far-sight to prepare you for the nuances and ever evolving standards of the web. If you are searching for a straight-as-an-arrow approach to web page building, then I highly recommend this book.

The Best on the market for the begining HTML user!, January 20, 1999
I have read at least 10 books on HTML and this is far and away the best!!!! With an excellent lay out and format, Lee Anne Phillips starts at square one and progresses to more advanced topics. You will not get bored or lost with this book. Co-Author Bill vernon's support and interest is the best seen to date! If you want a homepage, buy this book!!

Concise, and answers the right questions at the right time, December 27, 1998
This is a very good book. The authors have done an excellant job of explaining HTML, yet have maintained an unusual degree of conciseness for a book this large.

I used information from the first twelve chapters to redesign my website. The explanations of tables and frames, in particular, where a good match for my current level of expertise. Not a lot of fluff to read through--just meat. I was able to make use of both features just after reading a few pages. As I read through each chapter, the authors answered the right questions at the right times.

If the remaining 34 chapters are as well done as the first 12, my money will have been well spent.

A great guide to HTML, September 7, 1998
As a relative beginner, this book has been an absolute god-send. The author manages to be both informal and informative, providing an easily accessible yet highly comprehensive body of work that avoids the overly jocular tones that often crop up in this sort of publication. The first few chapters will drag for all but the total beginner. However these are essential in providing a solid foundation and lead you with ease in to later, more complicated territories. From hear, the authors take you effortlessly in to the less accessible areas of web development. Definitely worth the investment.

The BEST HTML book I have read yet !, November 20, 1999
Before buying this book, I was wondering what could have been packed in it to make it around 600 pages more than the average HTML books I have read so far.....When I got it in my hands and started perusing its pages, I got the feeling that I have got back every penny spent on it ! The best book on HTML I have come across and it should be your HTML's reference book from now on.

Pretty Good Book, January 9, 1999
This book is pretty good for basic HTML. It really gets you started for the Internet and standard web publishing. The other half of the book was about Dynamic HTML, getting understanding of JavaScript, XML, and other things. It did that pretty well, and I am still reading different sections.

Not the Best book but satisfying and above average.

VERY GOOD FOR THE BEGINNER THRU ADVACED, November 6, 1998
I WAS LOOKING FOR A SIMPLE YET THOROUGH BOOK ON HTML AND THIS IS A GOOD STARTER BOOK AND EVEN THE ADVACED CAN STILL USE IT

Incredibly well written!, October 20, 1998
I have bought several other books on HTML and they were all garbage. Everyone else tries to be too technical and longwinded. While this book reads very well, it doesn't sacrifice content. It takes you all the way from 'hello world' to advanced CGI, though I think you should mainly purchase this as an HTML book. This really is the best programming book I've ever bought.

Excellent approach , easily grasped definitions, June 29, 1998
I have a web development and hosting team that has been employing all the latest technology and techniques to the industry. To find a quick reference to a large body of information is essential to productivity. So I was pleasantly surprised to find the text and definitions in this book so comprehensive yet easily grasped. I have found it a convenient source for CSS and Scripting characteristics. Because of the simplicity of explantions I would recommend it even to beginners of HTML and it's associative parts.

Excellent Book, May 20, 2000
Starts off at the very beginning, and leads the reader to learn html with lots of pictures and examples. This book is very organized.
